LECTURE
HARMONY
Harmony involves the selection of element that share a common trait.
Variety is important to avoid harmony becoming monotonous. Harmony is
the sense that all of elements f your design fit together. They may fit
the same theme, aesthetic style or mood.
Variety is about a change or slight difference in elements and objects
in composition, to avoid a boring composition. Variety can also involve
varying angles, exposure, composition, etc.
UNITY
Unity refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout your
design whether they're colors, shapes or materials to pull the look
together. Unity occurs when these elements are composed in such a way
that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.
Unity and harmony are different aspect, they play distinct roles in the
way we experience design.
SCALE AND PROPORTION
Scale and proportion are both design elements that have to do with size.
Scale is the size of one object in relation to the other objects in a
design or artwork . Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an
object in relationship to other parts of the same object. Throughout the
centuries, designers have used scale and proportion to depict or
distract from the ideal.
Scale refers to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to
a specific unit of measure. Scale can be determined in two ways:
- actual measurements
- visual estimate based on comparison
Architectural drawings and scale models are examples of the applied use
of scale. Also, scale is used to specify or illustrate details based on
the relative sizes of objects. Substantial deviation from a normal scale
relationship can create dramatic results and visual interest within the
design or composition.
Proportion in art and design is the relationship of two or more elements
in a composition and how they compare to one another with respect to
size, color, quantity, degree, setting, etc. Proportion is said to be
harmonious when a correct relationship exist between the elements with
respect to size or quantity. The effective use of proportion in design
often results in harmony and unity.
Symbols are used to convey a message, concepts or civilization stories.
SYMBOL
Symbol is a sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something
else. In design, symbols can provide or convey information, equivalent
to one or more sentences of text, or even a whole story.
Pictorial Symbols
They are image-related and simplified pictures.
Abstract symbols
This symbols can look like the objects that they represent but have less
details.
Arbitrary symbols
Arbitrary symbols have no resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas
they represent. The symbol is invented with the meaning constructed.
Many are based on geometric shape and colours.
Word and Image
Imagery is a vital part of design, be it print or digital. Users and
viewers are able to relate to a concept or a brand if the right images
are used in a work of design. It is therefore important to use suitable
and relevant images when designing. Choosing the right words to pair
with the imagery is of high importance as it would deepen the meaning of
the design. Suitable typeface and strategic positioning of the type will
result in visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design.
INSTRUCTIONS
For task 3 we are expected to create 2 design that follow the principles of
harmony, unity, word and image, and symbol. For this task I decided to
choose harmony and word & image for my designs.
UNITY
For unity the first thing that I did was finding inspirational ideas that
represent unity. Also understand what makes a unity in a designs. Based on
the lecture given by Ms Jinchi, unity occurs when these elements are
composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness,
creating a theme.
So the first idea is inspired by the first example of harmony. I wanted to
create set of buildings together to create a harmony. The first thing I did
was search for buildings photo in Jakarta. Then trace creating a vector.

I think that it would be plain as it is just a set of buildings put
together, no meaning behind it. So my second idea is to take heritage
buildings in Indonesia and create a similar concept to the example. I wanted
to show that Indonesia is full of different cultures and background.
First step is to search famous heritage buildings in Indonesia. Then begin
tracing photos of those buildings to create a vector design of the building.
Then it all comes down to the composition of the buildings, how I should
arrange it to make an interesting design. What I get is the Borobudur Temple
and Prambanan Temple.

For my second design, I wanted to create a harmonious design through
photography. Because my dad have a coffee shop and grinds coffee by himself,
the first thing that came into my mind is coffee as the subject for my
second design. So my first idea is to create a design of unity of things
that goes together with coffee.

|
| Fig 1.5: Inspiration |
The first one is I took photos of coffee, waffles, laptop, and notebook. I
wanted to create a scene of working table during the pandemic time. This is
the result:
Then, I think that because there are only small amounts of elements, I
decided to combine unity with word and image principles. It is inspired by
pictures I find in Pinterest where a word and its meaning and a background
to show the word.

Then I received feedback from Mr Charles saying that some of the elements
are not recognisable like the laptop, notebook. Also, he said that try to
take the picture from a different angles finding the best one. And to either
pick the laptop or the notebook. Other than that, if I were to take the
pictures from an angle that wouldn't show the coffee inside the mug clearly,
I decide to use coffee beans and spread it around the mug to emphasise that
it is coffee inside.

Then, also a feedback given by Mr Charles, he said that it would be cool if it
had the smoke of the hot coffee coming out of the mug. So, I edited in Adobe
Photoshop to create the effect.

Last is to create the words. because the main focus of this picture is coffee.
The word I choose is coffee. Then I just arranged the words and meaning of it
into the image. I decided to put the words at the top right corner as it has a
framing created by the windows and the coffee mug would be seen clearly.

FINAL OUTCOME
UNITY
FEEDBACK
Great stuff. But think of what can be added to create it more interesting.
Some elements for the second design are not recognisable. Try to take the
photos from a different angle.
The photographic angle is much improved. now you can see why it greatly enhances the grouping of objects and influences the feel and ambient. the the strength of word reinforcing the image which is the primary source of inspiration.
