Task 3
LECTURE
Self-portrait is self representation in the form of drawing/painting/sculpture/design.
- A visual depiction of ourselves.
- It represents the designer/artist, how he see himself, what she's feeling and how he want to be seen by others.
- Self-portrait does not always need to be creation of a realistic image of ourselves but it can be anything that shows you.
INSTRUCTIONS
As for our first project, we are expected to create a portrait of ourselves by
applying the various principles that we had learnt. The requirements are to
contemplate on our life experiences while still applying the design
principles.
So the first thing I did was to brainstorm on the ideas. I did this using the
mind map that was given in the recorded lecture made by Ms Jinchi.

Brainstorming
Also to add more information, I did ask several of my friends of their first
impression towards me. Most of them said that I look like someone unfriendly
and serious person.
The first idea is a cat person. I see cat, I pet. Also I have 6 cats at home.
So I did some sketches on the theme cat person.

|
Idea 1 Sketches
The first idea is a cat shadowing me. The idea behind it is that, I consider
myself having similar behaviour as a cat which is sleep, eat, play and repeat.
That sums up my daily life. So from this sketch I am trying to give that
impression of me being a cat. This concept applies to all the other sketches.
However, I wanted to another impression of me wanting to be a cat. Living the
life that they want, without thinking about careers, grades and more.
So after I showed this during the feedback session, Dr Charles recommended me
to go with the third design, and to give it a twist he suggested to try an
application called Artivive.
After looking into what the app can do, I came up with another idea for the
project. Its to show the real me. Because most of friend's first impression is
unfriendly and serious. I wanted to show that once you got to know me I am a
goofy and easy going guy. So I did a sketch.

Adjustments
After creating a more detailed shading for the hoodie, I feel like it is plain and boring. So I decided to put my full name as the background in repetition and also shadow. Then after making lettering and shadows, I bring the final illustration into photoshop to make a png file so that later I could put videos and photos on the screen.
After finishing the illustration, I compile the videos and photos that I
feel like represents me the best, 'the real me'. Then proceed to compile
it to make the video for Artivive. I used Adobe Premiere Pro to create the
video.

Color Psychology
So in the video I wanted to apply a color psychology to it. Because I
wanted to show people's first impression of me (serious and unfriendly), I
wanted the design to be black and white to give the impression of
seriousness. Then when the video of me being myself to change into a warm
color to give the impression of positiveness.
FINAL OUTCOME SUBMISSION
Final Outcome - Self Portrait
Serious and unfriendly, the impressions I got when meeting with new
people. Most of them said it is because of my face. Flat and serious
face. In this artwork I wanted to show that, you just need to get to
know me better and closer. Showing the real me by presenting videos
of me with my friends, a place where I am me.
Note: Please use the app Artivive and scan the picture above.
FEEDBACK
Try to make your design not cliche. Dr Charles suggested me to use artivive for my project. So what I did was to learn more about Artivive, what can be created out of the application from youtube videos.
