Task 2

INSTRUCTIONS

For task 2 the name of the exercise is called Decisive Moment. We are told to create a minimalist poster defining the decisive moment of the scene from an existing narrative. Also we are expected to create a looping animated gif of the design.

The first movie came into my mind is The Conjuring Universe movies. It is a movie that I have been repeat watching a lot in my free time. There are some scenes that came into my mind, the first scene was from the first conjuring, the hide and clap scene. This scene shows the one of the first encounter between the characters and the ghost. The second scene that I wanted to brought up is the scene where Lorraine meets Valak at the first time in the Conjuring 2. This is an impactful scene because it is the first appearance and the encounter is needed later at the end of the movie.

1st Idea: Hide and Clap Scene

2nd Idea: Lorraine meets Valak

I decided to go with the valak scene and started to sketch the overall idea of the poster would look like. For the animation I am thinking of creating the walk scene of the shadow like it is in the movie scene.

Fig 1.1: Sketch

After the sketch, what I did was to focus first on the minimalist design of Valak. So I did a sketch on the Valak face first then begin digitalizes it.

Fig 1.4: Digitalize Outcome

I am happy with the outcome of the minimalist Valak. So i move to the next part on making the background.

Fig 1.5: Full Poster

I tried to create a minimalist design of the room from the scene and removed some furnitures to keep the focus on the Valak itself. Also I added the shadow of Valak like it is from the movie and the title of the conjuring from the internet. After the review with Ms Anis and Ms Jennifer, they had no comments and said I can proceed to the next step to create the animation. Before the demo shown my Miss Jen I did testing for the animation using the methods given in the Typography class, using frames for the animations.

Fig 1.6: Creating frame by frame (Illustrator)

Fig 1.7: Animating Poster Process (Photoshop)

Fig 1.8: First attempt (without delay per frame)

Fig 1.9: Second Attempt (given 0.2s for each frame)

After the second attempt I got to show the first animating tries to Ms Jen and Ms Anis. The feedback was that, the walking animation of the shadow is good. However, it is better to make the painting larger after the walking animation, to show the face of Valak. Also, to clean up the moving parts in the background and the white parts.

So what I did was creating more frames, I wanted it to be some kind of a scare. So, I created a dimming effect using opacity, to create an effect where the gif ends. Then to give the scare effect, I zoomed in only to the face.

Fig 2.0: Adjustment

In the second progression, I removed the title because I wanted to be shown at the end of the gif. So after the second progression, I moved on to creating the end of the gif.

So this is the final draft of the poster animation. The feedback that was given was it needs a tagline of the decisive moment or the movie itself, other than that there are no comments towards the final draft of the animation.

FEEDBACK

Specific Feedback:
1. Clean up (moving parts in the background, white spaces visible)
2. To add more animation like valak into the screen.
3. Add tagline

REFLECTION

I have a lot of fun creating this assignment. The demos given by Ms Jen is very helpful and cool to watch. Also, it is the second time of this semester to learn how to animate illustration into a gif. It is very interesting, and different methods are taught which can be done to our liking. Overall, I am really happy with the result of my work, it minimalistic and it really showcases a decisive moment really well.
