LECTURE

INSTRUCTIONS

For this project we are told to create a poster that is going to express the student's individuality and to reflect their personality into digital art self-expression. The main idea of the project is to build up self-confidence and discover our interest.

First thing we are told to do is to write a biography about ourselves.

BIOGRAPHY
My name is Ataka Lukman Hamzah, born and raised in Indonesia. I am both an indoor and outdoor person, depends on the mood. I like to play video games and do photography/videography. For video games, I mainly play first person shooter games. As for photography most of my pictures are portraits of people or animals. Both are my passion, from playing games I think of it as an escape for me from the problems I have in life. Photography was introduced to me by my father when I was a kid, from there on I got interested in doing photography.

My dreams are to have my hobbies or passion as my job. My parents have been the ones who keeps on cheering on for me to achieve what I want to be. They have been very supportive on guiding me and giving me my own choices on my life.

VISUALIZING MY WORK
For my work I have been wanting to create a retro neon artwork. Also, I decided to take my gaming passion as the main subject of the work. From a kid, I always looked up to professional gamers who got to be paid by playing games. So for my artwork would be a poster that would visualize me as a pro-player in a game.

POSTER EXAMPLES

Reference 1

For reference one I am trying to apply the neon retro them from it to my poster. I have been wanting to create this type of them for my work but didn't have the chance to. So I am going to use it in this project.

Reference 2

So in this reference I want to take the theme of games/esports and use this poster as my reference when creating one.

Reference 3

Similar to the second reference, this is an esport poster of a player, however, this one is more to graphical aspect and aesthetical feel without information on the games unlike the second reference.

PROGRESSION
Sketch:

Photoshoot:
For my portrait, I am thinking of using colors as the lighting to have a similar theme with the retro 80s neon theme. Also, by using the colored lighting this would emphasize the feel of 'gaming' much more, as gaming nowadays are into some rgb lights things.

Because I do not have proper photography lighting for the shoot, I use my monitor from my computer and my laptop as the source of lighting. These are the lighting layouts that I tried for the shoot.

First Attempt
So this is the first poster that I did, it was before the reshoot of my portrait. So I wanted to implented the style from reference 1 as the overall theme and reference 2 for the composition of the poster.

First Draft

So this is the first time I tried to create the poster, in here I am trying to implementing the same composition style as my third reference. For the theme of the poster will be following the idea from reference 1.

Poster Process
1. Layout & Background Color
First is that I use the quick selection to remove the background from my photos. Then, I created new page with the layout from IG stories. I use the solid color adjustment layer to create the background.

2. Creating the circle
Then I created, the circle using shape tool and using the filter gallery to create patterns of stripes. These stripes help me to create a quick selection using the channels and pressing ctrl + click on the channel to select. Then inverted it, and pressing delete to create the stripes.

3. Creating Lines

For the lines, I created it using the pen tool. Then using the layer style, changing the stroke into the color I wanted. Also, giving it an outer glow to give a neon lights effect. I created these lines to create a leading lines or flow of the readers. Also, these lines were created to get the viewers eyes where it supposed to be.

4. Text
For the text, I did the effects the same as the lines. For the text I use Futura as the fonts.

Second Attempt
After the first attempt, I wanted to make two other posters but still using the same elements as the first attempt. So the first poster on the second attempt, I added the game characters because I think that the first attempt does not give a big idea of 'gaming' that much. With the game characters, the poster's aim is much clearer. Other than that, I changed the flow of the lines. I created the lines from top right, then middle and last, bottom. However, I created the lines curving to make it seems that it is connect to each other. From the lines I wanted to lead the viewers line of sight from top than slowly to bottom or the other way around.

Then on the second poster, the same feeling of missing out the aim of the poster, I added more game elements. I added the title of a game tournament to give out the idea of a professional player. I positioned the title 'Valorant Champions' at the top of the poster to make it as the headline of the poster. Then move the motto 'Practice Makes Perfect' to the bottom.

Portrait Retake
After feedback session with Mr Martin, he said that my face was crushed. Too dark, there are no details on the face. So what I did was, I bought a pocket lighting and a gel filter to have the colours.

Then from here, I replaced my previous portraits on the posters into these pictures. Which turns out to be my final poster design. Also, I added a blue outer glow to my picture to isolate it more from the background, to make it the main subject of the poster.

After finishing out with the poster design, I bring the composition into after effects to be animated.

The first thing that I animated was the lines. I use masking to create the lines appearing. I separated the lines into three parts, top, middle and bottom. Each of the parts have different mask because I wanted them to appear one by one.

Then after the lines, I moved on to the title and motto. For the title I also use masking, however, masking using the shape tool. Then I inververted the layer so that the title would be masked out if its under the shape. Then using the position tool to animate the title to appear from top to bottom. For the motto, I use the original masking tool and moved the masking. Also, I used the opacity to create a dimming lights effects.

After that, moving on to the game characters, I only use the scale tool to create a moving effect. This animation starts from the beginning until the end of the video.

Then for the circle behind the game characters, I used the opacity tool to create a breathing effect to the circle to give more liveliness to the animation.

Lastly, because at the first couple of seconds it is a bit empty so, to create more things happening during that couple of seconds, I tweaked around with the spread of the outer glow and giving it a breathing effect.
