Design Principles - Final Project
(Week 8 - Week 10)
LECTURE
- Visual Analysis is a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles
- The purpose of visual analysis is to recognize the choices that a designer made
- or to understand how the formal properties of a design communicate ideas
- A critical part of visual literacy
- helps people read and critically interpret images
- practicing visual analysis sharpens critical judgment skills
- and helps people seek out answers

Visual Analysis
a. From what I have observed, the artist uses horizontal lines to create a horizon of the earth. With the use of horizontal lines, the artist created a sense of space or a continuation of space. This is important because the illustration is, the horizontal lines would help the illustration to give out a sense of place. Other than horizontal lines, from the background, it is seen that the trees are created using a curved line. The use of curved lines for the trees helped to bring the liveliness of the illustration
In terms of shapes, the artists seem to be using rounded
edge shapes. There is hardly a sharp-edged shape like a square, triangle, etc.
From the perspective of colours, the artist is trying to
take a colour scheme during the autumn season. Due to the goal of showing the autumn
season, the artist used warm colours such as orange, yellow, brown and dark
green. Other than that, the colours are bright. With the use of bright colours,
the illustration brings up positive emotions/energy to the viewers.
For the illustration, I think that the artist wants the
viewers to feel being in the illustration. I can say that because of the
elements used by the artist, which is trying to give that sense of place. For example,
the use of warm colour, it is to emphasize the autumn theme that the artist is
going for. It is seen that the artist is really emphasizing the point perspective
of the work. From my perspective, the first thing that attracts my eyes is the back
sole of the shoe. Compared to other elements, the scale of it can be considered
large. Also, the artist positioned it using the golden ratio, which would make
it a place where the human eyes fall at the first glance. But, if the eye does fall
on other elements, the artist did well on making the work filled with movement
that leads the eyes. For example, from the top left, the scarf would lead the
eyes towards the point of perspective. The roads also lead to the point of
perspective. So, the artist is using movement/flow in the work to guide the
viewer's eye all around the illustration.
The theme was to create a place during the autumn season. To
connect it, the artist use colours that follow what colours we would see
during the autumn season. Warm colours like brown, orange, orangish green. Also,
all the elements use one colour scheme which creates harmony. Also, to match
with the theme, the artist nailed the choices of elements that are used during
the autumn season. As I said in the previous paragraph, it is also connected
with movement. Almost all the elements create leading lines towards one area.
From what I have observed and analysed, the artist is trying to
give out the feeling of the autumn season to the viewers. The colour and
element choices, it does give out the sense of autumn. So the artist is going
for a work that gives out a sense of place, in this case, autumn. Other than
that, with all the movement and flow of the elements, I think that the artist is
trying to give liveliness to the work. Adding to that, I think the liveliness
that the artist is trying to convey is the fun and exciting moment during the
autumn. The artist is giving out that excitement also by bright colours that give
positive vibes/energy. It seems that, from the description of the artwork, the purpose of the work is to encourage others/viewers to enjoy the late autumn season. The work was uploaded on November 15, 2021. Autumn is usually at September to December, meaning it is targeted to people, reminding them of the fun and excitement of autumn before it ends.
Design Ideas
So the design for this project, I would like to bring up one of my fears, which is riding rollercoasters. In this design, I would like to implement, the aspect of the sense of place from the work that I had analysed. Also, to implement the use point perspective. The main goal of the work is to give the viewers a sense of riding a rollercoaster.
So I start the project with sketching, trying to make a rollercoaster rail using the point perspective.
After trying out the point perspective, I moved to an animating app called FlipaClip. From there I created frame by frame for the rollercoaster. Then ended with the first draft.

| All Frame - Draft 1 |
After creating the sketches for all the animation. I moved on to the outlines and colouring.
| Coloured Frames |
Here for the colors used, I am going with the usual colors for rollercoaster rides. I used pink yellow and blue. Then after coloring it in, I asked for feedback from Dr. Charles. The feedback given was that it does not seem that the rollercoaster is dropping down. So, what I did was create more frames. From 14 frames I to 17 frames. Also to add the sense of movement I used lines as if it is motion blur.

so this work concept is inspired by the artwork that I have analyzed. I took the inspiration of giving out the feeling of being there in the work. So the concept behind it is, my fear. Since a kid, I have had a lot of fears, loud voices, elevators, plane rides, and ROLLERCOASTER. Basically, everything that has to do with G-force changing. So in this design, I want to show one of my fear of riding a rollercoaster. This design is an interactive design that includes an animation of a rollercoaster. This is to boost the sense of being there. I want people to feel what I feel.
Please for a better experience of the work, download the app Artivive on your mobile phone. You can scan the thumbnail above to see the overall work on Artivive. Thank You!
Ataka, I am very proud of you that you constantly have the courage to keep trying something new! Great effort and creative investment throughout this semester!
