INSTRUCTIONS

So for the final project, we are expected to create a webtoon using Illustrator and animate it. The theme of this year's webtoon is horror. So, I started off by thinking of horror stories that can be made into a webtoon. The process of finding the right story is a bit long, and at last, I decided to ask my family members to tell their stories or stories that they have heard. Whereat the end I found the right one.

My story is a combination of two different stories, the first part is a ghost in the bathroom peaking inside one of my sister's friends. The other part is my sister's friend was woken up by the ghost. Bed shaking and the ghost in front of him telling him to wake up. So I combined both the stories, which results in this story:

STORY
Dimas and Aditya went back to their room after another exhausting day at boarding school. “Man, I’m drained,” said Dimas. “You still down to continue the audiobook?” asked Aditya. “Hell yeah. I couldn’t pass up Stephen King,” replied Dimas. Both boys sat on the couch, turned on their audio player, and continued listening to Stephen King’s “The Shining”. They listened for hours, not paying attention to time. It’s almost midnight. “Man, I’m getting goosebumps,” said Dimas. “Yeah, this might be the scariest book King has ever written,” commented Aditya. Just as the suspense from the book was building up, both boys heard a loud creaking of floorboards outside their room. It was odd because no one was allowed to wander in the halls at this time. “Yo, what was that? Did you hear that?” asked Dimas. “It’s probably just the wind,” replied Aditya. Dimas panicked. “Yo, yo turn it off dude this is getting scary.” “HAHA ok, we have another school day tomorrow anyway,” Aditya agreed.

The boys fell asleep almost immediately, too tired to worry about the weird noise earlier. Three hours later, Aditya awakened as he needed to go to the bathroom. Just as he was about to turn the doorknob to go outside, Aditya got frightened and turned around to wake Dimas. “Dim, I need to go to the bathroom but I’m too scared to go alone,” said Aditya while shaking Dimas. Dimas groaned. “Ugh, don’t be a wimp. The bathroom is just outside our room,” said Dimas weakly. Aditya let out a sigh and gave up convincing his friend. He opened the door of his room, looked around to see no one in the halls. He entered the bathroom and did his business. While washing his hands, Aditya looked at his reflection in the mirror. His eye bags were dark and droopy. Attempting to freshen himself, he splashed water onto his face. As he lifted his head from the sink, in the mirror behind his reflection, he saw the head of someone peeking inside. Adit turned around in a flash. “Who’s there?” he called out. But as he turned around to face the door, there was no one there. Walking nervously to the door, Adit called out again. No response. He ran back to his room and shut the door. He looked over to Dimas’ bed. Dimas was sound asleep and didn't move an inch. It couldn’t be Dimas in the bathroom. “It must have been my imagination,” Aditya said to himself. Feeling a little bit relieved, he decided to go back to sleep.

Shortly after closing his eyes, he felt his bed shake. All of a sudden, he felt someone pull his blanket. “Bangun bang, bangun.” His eyes immediately flew open and right in front of him kneeled a little boy, smiling eerily. Adit jumped out of bed and screamed at the top of his lungs. He ran straight for the door as fast as he could, grabbing his cell phone on the way. Without looking back, he turned on his cell phone to dial Dimas. Just as he was about to hit the call button, a text message appeared. It read “I will arrive shortly, make sure you unlock the door for me”. It was from Dimas. Adit immediately came to a halt. “What? What does he mean he’ll arrive shortly?” he asked himself. With adrenaline still rushing through his body, he tried to remember last night’s events and what just happened. Dimas was with him last night. What does this text mean?

PROGRESSION
After finishing up the story, I decided to create an events timeline to start the webtoon. For me, it would be easier to determine the flow of the story later on in the creation of the webtoon.

Scene 1
  • Boarding School
  • Dimas & Aditya
  • Walking to room
Scene 2
  • Room
  • Listening to audibook
  • show audiobook
scene 3
  • hallway (creak, stomp)
  • talking
  • talking
  • sleep
scene 4
  • adit wakeup
  • ask dimas to accompany
  • no answer
  • to toiliet
scene 5
  • blank (doing his business)
  • wash hands
  • ghost appear on the mirror
  • frigthened
  • talk
  • back to room
scene 6
  • sleep
  • blank (couple hours)
scene 7
  • bed shake
  • adit wakes up
  • sees boy figure
  • shocked
  • take cellphone
  • run
  • dimas chat adit
  • adit surprise
After creating this timeline, I a have a review session with Ms. Anis and Ms. Jennifer, they reviewed my story. They approved of it, however, there are some changes that could be done to connect the story better. Ms. Anis suggested I create a scenario where the ghost would come for them if the story of the boy listened during a full moon. I understand what Ms. Anis is trying to say so I implement her suggestion to my story.

From here, I proceed to create the sketch for my webtoon based on the event timeline that I have created.

Fig 1.1: Sketches

Fig 1.2: Sketches 2

So these are the sketches for the first couple of pages. I didn't get to finish up my sketches because there is not enough time. So I proceed to make the webtoon in Illustrator.

Fig 1.3: Digitized Sketch

Fig 1.4: Digitized Sketch

Fig 1.5: Final Webtoon draft

So the theme that I was going for in this webtoon is the old building that is made out of wood. It is a classic horror plot scene. There is no progression that can be given out during the digitalization of the webtoon. I use the pen tool to create the figures based on the sketch. From there onwards, I tried my best to recycle the previous panels, to be more efficient. It is noticeable that I have used the same panel several times, or not I changed some details.

After finishing the webtoon, I published it to webtoon. Before publishing it, we need to give a thumbnail for the chapter. Back again to the decisive moment, from here I chose the best that could go well with the description of the webtoon. So I chose the panel where Dimas is half awake looking at the boy figure.

Then after choosing the thumbnail the webtoon is uploaded. Then from here, I moved on to make the animation for the webtoon. Before moving it into After Effects, I created new files for each of the pages. This will make things easier to sort out. For example, eyes, mouth, or any details.

Final Outcome

Webtoon Link:

FEEDBACK

To change some parts of the story to give it more of a connection in between events.

REFLECTION

For task 3, I think it is a very fun task so far because it is my first time to ever create a full chapter of a webtoon. Which I cannot imagine, from the past few years. Other than that, it is also fun because it is one of my favorite genres of movies which is horror. Creating a story or a webtoon is very enjoyable.
